Prince William of Hesse-Kassel, also known as Wilhelm I, was born on June 3, 1743, in Kassel, Germany. He was the eldest son of Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, and Princess Mary of Great Britain. He was educated in Kassel and later studied at the University of Leipzig.
In 1764, he married Princess Wilhelmina Caroline of Denmark, daughter of King Frederick V of Denmark. The couple had four children, including their eldest son, William II, who succeeded his father as Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel.
Prince William was a distinguished soldier and fought in several battles, including the American Revolutionary War, where he served as a field marshal in the Hessian forces on the British side. He led the Hessian troops during the Battle of Long Island and the Siege of Fort Lee.
After the war, Prince William returned to Europe and dedicated his efforts to governing Hesse-Kassel. He introduced several social and economic reforms which helped to modernize the state. He also supported the arts and sciences, establishing the University of Kassel and funding several cultural institutions.
Prince William died on February 27, 1821, in Kassel. He was succeeded by his son, William II, who continued his father's modernization efforts in Hesse-Kassel.
